Still, yet y already

Still, yet y already son tres palabras empleadas muy habitualmente en inglés, pero normalmente los estudiantes las confunden. Se usan las tres palabras para hablar sobre lo que está ocurriendo en el presente o el futuro que esperamos. Es más, estas palabras se utilizan para declarar dónde está alguien o algo respecto al momento presente (relativo al emisor).

Still: Se utiliza para hablar acerca de algo incompleto en el presente

  • George, are you still at work?
  • We’re still annoyed with you for being so mean.
  • Here in New York it is still so cold here. It’s going to be a long winter.

Yet: se utiliza para preguntar si alguien o algo ha pasado

También se usa principalmente en preguntas y respuestas negativas con un significado similar a ‘still’.

  • Have we finished the examsyet? No, not yet.
  • I have yet to write a book before I retire.
  • jack still hasn’t finished his apprentice yet.

Already: Solo se emplea para personas o cosas en el pasado o presente, NO en el futuro

Normalmente significa que alguien o algo ha terminado, puede tener también el sentido de sorpresa.

  • She’s already done everything she needed to do.
  • Connor has already arrived, and he’s waiting for you.
  • Jamie has already painted the wall.
